Perplexity has officially made its innovative AI-powered Comet browser accessible to everyone. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed on Thursday that the browser is now generally available. Previously, access was limited to those with a Perplexity Max subscription or an exclusive invitation. Currently, this AI-enhanced browser is available for Windows and Mac users, with mobile applications still under development. The standout feature of Comet is its versatile sidebar AI assistant, designed to efficiently summarize content, analyze various web pages, and execute a range of intelligent, agent-like tasks.
Comet Browser: Now Fully Accessible to Everyone
In a recent announcement, Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, revealed the broad availability of the Comet browser. Initially launched in July, this AI-driven browser was first exclusive to Max subscribers and required an invitation. Although access gradually expanded to Pro subscribers and even the free tier, direct downloads were not possible until now. This significant change opens the platform to all interested users.
Comet leverages the identical powerful search engine found in Perplexity’s primary platform. This means that when users enter a search query directly into the URL bar, they will receive the characteristic Perplexity-style results, complete with its distinct formatting and presentation. A prominent feature of the browser is its integrated AI assistant, conveniently located in the sidebar and easily activated with a click of a toolbar button.
Upon activation, the assistant intelligently understands the context across all open tabs, allowing it to accurately answer user questions related to the content. For example, if you’re browsing a product on an e-commerce site, you could ask the chatbot to quickly locate other retailers offering the same item with faster shipping options.
Adding to its utility, Comet’s AI assistant is equipped with advanced agentic capabilities. This means users can instruct it to perform actions like scheduling meetings, composing emails relevant to the current web page, or even completing purchases on e-commerce platforms. In a trial, our team successfully tasked the assistant with finding and navigating to the checkout page for the most affordable 43-inch smart TV available.
Naturally, utilizing these advanced features necessitates providing the AI with relevant information, including your location, e-commerce login credentials, and payment details. Should you choose not to provide credit card information, the assistant will still direct you to the checkout page and provide guidance for manual payment completion.
