Emergency responders were actively battling a colossal fire at a Chevron refinery located just beyond the bustling city of Los Angeles on Thursday night, October 2, 2025.
The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom officially confirmed the significant blaze, which had erupted at Chevron’s facility in El Segundo, via a post on social media platform X.
As of reporting, Chevron Corporation had not yet issued a statement regarding the incident. Similarly, both the El Segundo police and fire departments opted not to provide immediate comments.
Details regarding the origin of the fire, as well as any potential injuries, remained unconfirmed at the time.

“Our office is actively collaborating with both local and state agencies to ensure the safety and protection of the surrounding community,” stated Mr. Newsom’s office.
El Segundo, a picturesque beachside city situated approximately 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Los Angeles, lies just about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Los Angeles International Airport.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, in an update shared on X, reassured the public that there was no known impact to the airport as a result of the fire.
“The LAFD (Los Angeles Fire Department) remains fully prepared to offer assistance should any further mutual aid be requested,” she added.
According to Chevron’s official website, the expansive refinery spans roughly 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers) and incorporates over 1,100 miles (1,770 kilometers) of pipelines. It possesses the capacity to process up to 290,000 barrels of crude oil daily, producing a range of fuels including gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel. The facility has been in continuous operation since 1911.
