Tata Communications has announced a significant partnership with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to roll out eSIM services nationwide across India. This initiative, powered by Tata Communications’ Move platform, allows users to activate mobile connectivity remotely, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. This feature is particularly beneficial for users with dual-SIM supported handsets, enabling them to utilize an eSIM alongside a physical SIM, which is especially convenient for international travel.
Tata Communications Powers BSNL’s eSIM Rollout
The company confirmed the deployment of its advanced digital infrastructure to support BSNL’s newly launched eSIM services for Indian mobile users. These eSIM services leverage Tata Communications’ GSMA-accredited Subscription Management platform, Move, and are delivered through Tata Communications Collaboration Services Private Ltd. (TCCSPL). This robust platform empowers BSNL to efficiently manage eSIM provisioning for its extensive mobile user base throughout the country.
The introduction of BSNL’s eSIM services marks a pivotal moment for the state-run telecom provider. BSNL’s eSIMs facilitate the remote provisioning of 2G, 3G, and 4G services through a secure QR code, effectively eliminating the requirement for traditional physical SIM cards. This means users with compatible dual-SIM devices can seamlessly integrate an eSIM with their existing physical SIM card.
Commenting on the collaboration, A Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, stated, “The launch of Pan-India eSIM service represents a strategic advancement in our national telecom capabilities. With Tata Communications’ strong connectivity experience and forward-looking innovation, we are enhancing the flexibility, security, and efficiency of mobile services for citizens across India. It aligns with our commitment to fostering digital independence and ensuring robust infrastructure for the future.”
BSNL commenced its eSIM rollout in the Tamil Nadu circle in August. Beyond eSIMs, the telecom operator has been actively undertaking several initiatives in recent months to bolster its presence and expand services across India.
For instance, the telco launched its 4G network in Delhi in August. Additionally, BSNL signed a one-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Posts to facilitate the sale of SIM cards and offer mobile recharge services through India Post’s vast network of 1.65 lakh post offices.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated BSNL’s entirely indigenous 4G network from Jharsuguda, Odisha. During this event, over 97,500 BSNL mobile towers, constructed entirely with domestic technology at an estimated cost of Rs. 37,000 crores, were commissioned.
