2K Games is forging ahead with its free-to-play third-person shooter, currently known by the working title Project Ethos, quashing earlier rumors of its potential cancellation. This commitment was recently reinforced in an internal memo from 2K President David Ismailer.
Ismailer announced that Ben Brinkman has been appointed as the new studio head for developer 31st Union. This crucial leadership change follows the departure of the previous boss, former Call of Duty executive Michael Condrey, earlier this year. Ismailer highlighted that feedback from the Project Ethos test in Fall 2024 was highly illuminating. While it confirmed the underlying promise of a roguelike shooter, it also underscored the necessity for the game to establish a more distinct identity.
“Our confidence in Project Ethos grows every day,” Ismailer stated, emphasizing his belief that the game’s “renewed vision” is now perfectly poised to deliver on its promise to players.
Brinkman brings a wealth of experience from the shooter genre, having recently served five years as executive producer for Apex Legends at Respawn. Prior to that, he was an executive producer for the acclaimed Call of Duty series at Activision from 2008 to 2020. This role marks a return to 2K for Brinkman, who previously worked as a producer for the company between 2006 and 2008.
A previous hands-on preview of Project Ethos by GameSpot described the game as “delightfully different” but noted its struggle with defining its core identity. Details regarding this “renewed vision” are still under wraps, and 2K has not yet announced when more information or new gameplay footage will be shared.
Reports in February had indicated that Project Ethos was at a critical juncture, requiring either a significant “pivot or be killed.” This announcement of renewed leadership and strategic clarity comes shortly after Electronic Arts disclosed that it is in the process of being acquired by an investor consortium led by Saudi Arabia in a substantial $55 billion deal.
