The government of Uttar Pradesh has announced a significant expansion in medical education, approving the addition of 950 new MBBS seats and 271 postgraduate (PG) seats for the 2025-26 academic session. This strategic move, impacting both government and private medical colleges across the state, aims to substantially strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s healthcare infrastructure and create more opportunities for aspiring medical professionals. This expansion aligns with the state’s continuous efforts to tackle doctor shortages and improve medical training facilities, ultimately addressing the growing demand for healthcare services in both urban and rural communities.
Government and Private Colleges See Increase in Seats
A significant majority of the new MBBS seats, specifically 750, will be distributed among 12 private medical institutions. Concurrently, 200 additional MBBS seats are slated for three government medical colleges. This includes 100 new seats at the Autonomous State Medical College in Amethi, and 50 seats each at the ESIC Medical Colleges in Noida and Varanasi. This expansion will bring the total MBBS capacity in Uttar Pradesh to approximately 12,800 seats for the upcoming academic year, comprising 5,450 in government colleges and 7,350 in private institutions.
Postgraduate Seats Also Expanded
The increase extends beyond undergraduate programs to postgraduate courses, with 271 new MD and MS seats also approved. Government colleges will account for a large share, adding 233 of these PG seats. The remaining 38 new PG seats will be offered at Narayan Medical College in Kanpur, a private institution. Consequently, the total number of PG seats in Uttar Pradesh will rise to 4,297, with 2,137 in government colleges and 2,160 in private colleges. This expansion is critical for enhancing postgraduate medical education opportunities and bolstering the state’s capacity to produce specialized medical professionals.
Expansion Strengthens Healthcare Infrastructure
This comprehensive addition of both MBBS and PG seats is anticipated to significantly advance healthcare delivery throughout Uttar Pradesh. By broadening access to medical education, the state intends to cultivate a larger pool of qualified doctors, directly addressing existing shortages and elevating the quality of healthcare services overall. This initiative underscores the government’s long-term commitment to making medical education more accessible to a broader range of students, with a particular emphasis on improving medical facilities and staffing in rural and underserved regions.
This comprehensive expansion signifies a crucial milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its medical education and overall healthcare capabilities.
