What was once a notorious dumping ground in Lalur, Thrissur, has achieved an incredible transformation, now proudly hosting a world-class sports complex. The inaugural phase of the I.M. Vijayan International Sports Complex, a tribute to the district’s football icon, commenced operations on Monday, marking a historic moment for the region.
The grand opening ceremony was led by Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman, with Mayor M.K. Varghese presiding over the event. The esteemed footballer himself, I.M. Vijayan, graced the occasion as the chief guest, symbolizing the spirit of this ambitious project.
This magnificent facility, a joint venture between the Thrissur City Corporation and the State Sports Department, is already being lauded as one of India’s premier sporting destinations. Constructed on 14 acres of Corporation-owned land, the project benefited from expert oversight by KITCO and substantial financial backing from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Out of an impressive total administrative sanction of ₹70.56 crore, KIIFB contributed a significant ₹56.01 crore.
The initial phase of the complex boasts an array of cutting-edge amenities. A sprawling indoor stadium with a seating capacity for 5,000 spectators features dedicated courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and handball. Complementing these are two modern dormitories, comfortable guest rooms, a fully equipped gym, a luxurious VIP lounge, a medical room, and a comprehensive network of 53 washrooms.
Further enriching the complex are a FIFA-standard synthetic football turf and an ITF-standard acrylic tennis court, designed to meet international specifications. The aquatics complex includes a 25m x 12.5m practice pool, accompanied by its own pavilion and administrative block. Ensuring seamless operation, a 45,000-litre overhead tank and a massive 4,75,000-litre underground reservoir provide ample water supply.
Looking ahead, plans are actively in motion for the second phase of development. This next stage will introduce a dedicated hockey ground and a residential block, offering accommodation for athletes and coaches, further solidifying the complex’s role as a holistic sports training and competition hub.
