The global phenomenon of The Witcher, encompassing a hit Netflix series and incredibly successful video games, all began with Andrzej Sapkowski’s acclaimed novels. While Sapkowski expresses satisfaction with his current contract agreements with CD Projekt Red, the developer behind the games, he’s noted a surprising shift: they rarely consult him for advice anymore.
During recent promotions for his newest novel, Sapkowski recalled a time when CD Projekt Red frequently sought his insights regarding characters and lore of the world he brought to life. However, he now finds these requests for his expertise to be exceptionally infrequent.
Initially, when CD Projekt Red first adapted his novels, Sapkowski opted for an upfront payment instead of a royalty-based deal. Following the immense success of The Witcher 3, he pursued legal action against the developer, seeking more favorable terms. The details of their settlement were not made public, but Sapkowski now characterizes his relationship with the developers in a much more positive light.
Sapkowski stated, “The contracts between me and the game people are excellent right now. Let’s hope it stays that way.”
The Witcher saga continues to expand across various media. Netflix recently launched Season 4 of its adaptation, with a fifth and final season planned to conclude the series. Concurrently, CD Projekt Red began active development on The Witcher 4 last year. Although the game was showcased at Epic’s State of Unreal event, impressing many, developers later clarified that the presentation was a technical demonstration, not a true preview of the game, which currently lacks a release date. A collection of 30 screenshots from The Witcher 4’s technical demo was also presented, offering fans an early visual taste of the highly anticipated game. Fans can also anticipate a final patch for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2026, which will introduce mod support for consoles.
