Indian opening batter Smriti Mandhana has once again illuminated the cricketing world, inscribing her name in the history books during the ODI World Cup final against South Africa. Her magnificent performance saw her become the highest run-scorer for India Women in a single edition of the tournament, a testament to her consistent brilliance.
Mandhana’s impactful innings of 45 runs off just 58 deliveries in the final, while opening for India, propelled her past the previous record of 409 runs, which was held by former captain Mithali Raj from the 2017 World Cup. This outstanding achievement underscores her significant contribution throughout the entire campaign.

Demonstrating remarkable consistency, Mandhana finished the tournament leading the charts with a total of 434 runs across 9 innings. Her stellar run included a high score of 109 and an impressive average of 54.25, all while maintaining an aggressive strike-rate of 99.08.
Although she achieved a significant personal milestone, the stylish left-hander narrowly missed another major landmark: completing 1,000 runs in Women’s ODI World Cups. Currently, only Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and the legendary Mithali Raj hold a spot in this exclusive club from India.
India’s strong start in the thrilling final was largely due to the composed approach of their opening pair. Mandhana’s powerful 104-run partnership from 106 balls with Shafali Verma, who herself scored a quick half-century in 49 balls, ensured a solid foundation after India was asked to bat first.
However, Mandhana’s brilliant run came to an end in the fourth delivery of the 18th over. She edged a cut shot off Chloe Tryon directly to wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta, bringing an end to what had been a dominant opening stand for India. Following her departure, semi-final hero Jemimah Rodrigues stepped up to the crease as India continued to push beyond the 100-run mark, aiming for a formidable total in the crucial final.
