Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has showered immense praise on India’s dynamic young left-arm spinner, Sree Charani, for her outstanding contribution to the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. The seasoned 39-year-old veteran believes Charani possesses all the hallmarks of a future cricket sensation and meticulously analyzed the technical prowess that fueled her success since her international debut in April this year.
Charani concluded her inaugural ODI World Cup campaign with an impressive haul of 14 wickets across nine matches, boasting an average of 27.64. Her standout performances in the high-stakes knockout stages were particularly crucial. The 21-year-old demonstrated remarkable composure under pressure, delivering figures of 2 for 49 in the semi-final and 1 for 48 in the grand finale, significantly contributing to India’s historic title victory.
“Her ball rotation is executed at the perfect speed, mirroring the precision of bowlers like Sophie Ecclestone, Jess Jonassen, or Sophie Molineux, especially in her weight transfer. She adopts a beautiful side-on position, from which her hand seamlessly comes forward. There is no compromise in her action, no energy lost,” Ashwin elaborated on his YouTube channel.
He further added, “She absolutely dominated the World Cup. She is undeniably the primary reason India secured this World Cup. Sree Charani is poised to become a superstar bowler in the years to come.”
Ashwin also drew powerful comparisons between India’s 2025 triumph and other landmark victories in Indian cricket history. He emphasized that the foundation laid by Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her dedicated team would be celebrated for generations, much like the unforgettable World Cup wins achieved under the leadership of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
“It’s important to remember that coming from this background, Harmanpreet Kaur has endured numerous disappointments. Take the 2017 World Cup final, for instance, where they overcame Australia only to fall to England. Jhulan Goswami was part of that journey. Harmanpreet Kaur has experienced these situations firsthand. She has faced defeats, even from positions where the World Cup seemed within reach. From an outsider’s perspective, one might not fully grasp the sheer effort she has invested,” Ashwin stated.
He concluded, “The legacy she has started — a seed she has sown — will be discussed 10 or 20 years from now, just as we speak of Kapil Dev’s impact or Dhoni’s achievements in 2011 or 2007. This triumph will be etched in history.”
