India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has showered high praise on the young left-arm spinner Sree Charani for her outstanding performance in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. Ashwin, 39, believes Charani is destined for superstardom and meticulously analyzed the technical brilliance that has marked her success since her debut in April this year.
Charani concluded her maiden ODI World Cup campaign with an impressive 14 wickets across nine matches, maintaining an average of 27.64. Her ability to perform under pressure was evident with crucial spells in the knockout stages, including figures of 2 for 49 in the semi-final and 1 for 48 in the final, which were pivotal in India’s historic title victory.
A video clip shows Harmanpreet Kaur visibly emotional after leading India to World Cup glory.
“Her ball rotation is absolutely spot on, rivaling the likes of Sophie Ecclestone, Jess Jonassen, or Sophie Molineux in terms of weight transfer,” Ashwin elaborated on his YouTube channel. “She adopts a beautiful side-on position, from which her hand comes forward without any collapse or energy leakage.”
He continued, “She absolutely dominated the World Cup. She is arguably the most significant reason India won this World Cup. She is undoubtedly going to be a superstar bowler in the future.”
Ashwin also drew powerful comparisons between India’s 2025 triumph and legendary victories in Indian cricket history, asserting that the legacy established by Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her squad will be revered for generations, just like the iconic World Cup wins under Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
“Harmanpreet Kaur has undoubtedly faced many disappointments throughout her career. Take the 2017 World Cup final, for instance, where they overcame Australia only to fall to England. Jhulan Goswami was part of that team. Harmanpreet Kaur has witnessed such moments, experiencing defeats even in situations where a World Cup seemed within grasp. From an outsider’s perspective, one might not fully appreciate the immense effort she has invested,” Ashwin remarked.
He concluded, “The foundation she has laid—much like what Kapil Dev established, or Dhoni in 2011 and 2007—will be talked about for years to come. This victory will hold a similar place in history.”
