Chief Justice of India-designate Surya Kant recently encouraged graduating law students to cultivate a spirit of continuous learning and to never shy away from questioning established certainties, stating that this willingness is what truly differentiates successful legal professionals. Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University in Lucknow, Justice Kant emphasized that true professional growth stems from intellectual curiosity rather than just accumulated knowledge.
He drew inspiration from the university’s namesake, Ram Manohar Lohia, a figure who understood that intellectual complacency is a dangerous comfort and that true progress requires the courage to ask questions. Justice Kant congratulated the graduates for successfully completing a rigorous and intellectually demanding educational journey.
This was the sixth of eleven convocations Justice Kant is scheduled to attend this year, and he expressed his intent to share fresh perspectives with each graduating class. Reflecting on his own career, he shared how failures became valuable lessons, teaching him the importance of thoroughness and starting anew, habits that have shaped his professional approach.
Allahabad High Court Chief Justice Arun Bhansali also addressed the graduating students, advising them that while eloquent words like justice and liberty are inspiring, the true essence often lies in the unspoken nuances. He reminded them that their education thus far has been within a supportive structure, but the professional world requires self-reliance and meticulous preparation, stressing that preparation, not just eloquence, builds a lasting career. Justice Bhansali concluded by noting that courtroom success is earned by the most prepared minds, not necessarily the loudest voices.
