Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), managed by the Adani Group and AAI, has announced a six-hour closure of its runways on November 20th. This temporary halt in flight operations is essential for the airport to conduct its annual comprehensive post-monsoon maintenance, ensuring passenger safety and operational excellence.
According to Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), this scheduled maintenance is a critical step to uphold the highest levels of safety and reliability, aligning the airport’s operations with stringent global aviation standards.
Specifically, both major cross runways, designated 09/27 and 14/32, will be non-operational on November 20th, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This period is dedicated to a detailed maintenance plan executed annually following the monsoon season.
CSMIA, renowned for handling approximately 950 flights daily, operates with two intersecting runways, 9/27 and 14/32. Its high traffic volume makes it India’s second busiest airport, only surpassed by Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
To minimize disruption, MIAL proactively issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) well in advance. This crucial communication allows airlines and other operational partners to adjust flight schedules and staffing, facilitating smooth coordination and significantly reducing potential inconvenience for passengers.
For those unfamiliar, a NOTAM is an official notice providing vital information to personnel involved in all aspects of flight operations.
The maintenance work itself will be extensive, encompassing thorough inspections, necessary surface repairs, and detailed technical evaluations of critical systems such as runway lighting, ground markings, and drainage infrastructure. This ensures all components are in optimal condition.
