Namewee, the popular and often controversial Malaysian rapper, has been charged with illegal drug use and possession, according to reports from local media on Monday. The 42-year-old artist was arrested last month and has since pleaded not guilty to both charges. He has been released on bail.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, is well-known for his satirical songs and music videos that tackle sensitive topics prevalent in Malaysia, including religious issues and criticism of China’s censorship policies. He maintains his innocence, stating on Instagram that he was not using or carrying drugs and that the truth would emerge once the police report is released.
Authorities reported that Namewee was apprehended on October 22nd in a hotel room where substances believed to be MDMA (ecstasy) were discovered. Following his arrest, he tested positive for several illicit substances, including amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC. He was subsequently held for two days as part of the investigation.
If found guilty of drug possession, Namewee could face a jail sentence of up to five years and potentially corporal punishment.
In an unrelated development, a police official noted that Namewee was at the same hotel around the same time as Iris Hsieh, a Taiwanese influencer who was found deceased in her hotel room. Namewee expressed his condolences for Hsieh’s death on Instagram, also highlighting a perceived delay in the ambulance’s arrival.
The rapper also alluded to receiving blackmail in recent days and vowed to “fight to the end.” He has a history of controversy surrounding his music, including his 2016 arrest for the music video ‘Oh My God,’ which was filmed at various Malaysian places of worship and criticized for allegedly offending religious sensitivities. In 2021, his song ‘Fragile’ gained attention for its critique of Chinese nationalism and sensitive political commentary, leading to a ban in China.
