Malaika Arora Defends Bollywood Dance Numbers, Acknowledges Past Glamour

In a candid discussion about the role of dance numbers in Bollywood films, actress Malaika Arora stated that these sequences have significantly evolved since she began her career. She admitted that in earlier times, such performances were predominantly focused on glamour and spectacle, often lacking connection to a woman’s individual narrative.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Malaika highlighted the increasing awareness among filmmakers today. She believes that these dance numbers are now being more thoughtfully integrated into storylines, with stronger character contexts. According to her, the emphasis has shifted from being merely provocative to showcasing performance and presence, allowing women to command their space on screen.

Addressing the common association of ‘item songs’ with the male gaze, Malaika acknowledged the perception but offered her perspective. “Yes, item songs have often been linked to the male gaze, but I’ve always looked at them differently,” she shared. “For me, dance is about confidence and expression. When I perform, I focus on enjoying the moment and bringing my own energy to it. As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that’s what matters most. It’s about celebrating the art and having fun with it rather than overthinking the labels.”

Malaika recently appeared in the special dance number ‘Poison Baby’ for the film Thamma, featuring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna. She expressed that participating in the song was a way to celebrate her enduring career, demonstrating that relevance and passion can be maintained at any stage of life, irrespective of age. She emphasized, “age doesn’t define your capacity to perform or inspire.”

Known for her iconic dance performances, Malaika has delivered memorable hits like ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya,’ ‘Gur Naal Ishq Mitha,’ and ‘Munni Badnaam Hui.’ She is also a familiar face as a judge on the reality series India’s Got Talent.
