The Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) is gearing up for its 7th convocation ceremony, scheduled for November 5th in Dharwad. This significant event will see a remarkable 7,716 students from the 2022-23 and 2023-24 academic years receive their graduate and postgraduate degrees. Adding to the prestige, two distinguished personalities, including a former Supreme Court judge, will be honored with doctoral degrees.
During a recent press conference held at KSLU’s Rayapur campus in Hubballi, Vice-Chancellor Prof. C. Basavaraju announced that Justice Shivaraj V. Patil, a former Supreme Court judge and current chairman of the Karnataka State Border and River Protection Commission, will deliver the much-anticipated convocation address. The ceremony will take place at the Farmers Knowledge Centre of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad.
The convocation will be presided over by the Chancellor of the University and Governor of Karnataka, Thawar Chand Gehlot. Joining him as a guest of honor will be H. K. Patil, the esteemed Minister for Law, Justice, Human Rights, Parliamentary Affairs, Legislation, and Tourism.
Prof. Basavaraju elaborated on the numbers, stating that 4,053 male and 3,663 female candidates are slated to receive their respective degrees. In addition to these, 28 top-performing students will be awarded gold medals, while 150 rank holders will receive special certificates. The event will also celebrate two individuals receiving doctoral degrees, 29 students earning cash prizes, and seven being granted scholarships.
Distinguished Honorary Doctorates
This year’s convocation will bestow honorary doctoral degrees upon two eminent individuals: Justice Abdul Nazeer, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, and V. Sudhish Pai, a senior advocate practicing in Bengaluru.
Boosting Legal Research and Infrastructure
Responding to queries, Prof. Basavaraju highlighted KSLU’s commitment to fostering legal research. He proudly shared that 18 candidates are currently pursuing research, with six to eight expected to receive their doctoral degrees within the next four months. The university actively supports these endeavors, including providing financial assistance.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted a growing demand for the university’s five-year integrated courses, such as BA LLB, BBA LLB, and BCom LLB, attracting a significant number of student applications. Regarding campus development, he mentioned that a proposal seeking a ₹100 crore grant for new administrative blocks, a library, guest house, and canteen has been submitted to the state government. He confirmed that while building works are ongoing across 39 guntas of the campus, the university has not yet received any formal notice from the Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation regarding concerns raised by municipal councillors. Registrar KSLU Geeta Koulagi and Dean and Registrar (Evaluation) KSLU Prof. Dr. Ratna R. Bharamgoudar were also present at the press conference.
