Kristin Chenoweth recently spoke out about the intense criticism she received after posting a tribute to Charlie Kirk. In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the acclaimed singer and actress shared that the widespread public outrage from her tribute “nearly broke” her.
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically killed in an incident on September 10th. Chenoweth, a Tony Award winner, expressed her grief on social media, a move that deeply angered a significant portion of her fanbase, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community, who are often critical of Kirk’s political stances.
Chenoweth had initially posted, “I’m. So. Upset. Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still,” accompanied by a broken-heart emoji. This comment quickly ignited online debate, with many fans criticizing her for seemingly supporting an activist known for his opposition to LGBTQ+ rights.
Breaking her silence following the online furor, Chenoweth explained her reaction, stating, “I saw what happened online with my own eyes. And I had a human moment of reflection.” She acknowledged that her comment caused hurt to some individuals, which in turn, pained her. Chenoweth emphasized her commitment to both her Christian faith and her role as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, highlighting the apparent contradiction that her fans were reacting to.
During her latest interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on Monday, Chenoweth declined to elaborate further on the controversy. When asked about Kirk, who passed away at the age of 31, she briefly responded, “It was tough on me.” She concluded by stating she wouldn’t dwell on the incident, as she had already processed it and that it had profoundly affected her. “And that’s all I’m going to say. You probably know my heart, so you probably know,” she added, suggesting her supporters would understand her intentions.
