V.D. Satheesan, Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition, has formally expressed his concerns to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the state government’s justification for calling a special session of the Kerala Legislative Assembly on November 1, 2025.
On Saturday, October 18, 2025, Mr. Satheesan strongly criticized the government, stating that they had ‘disregarded political decorum’ by deliberately withholding information from the Opposition about the alleged urgency to hold an Assembly session on a weekend holiday.
He highlighted that according to Rule 13(2), the government is required to obtain the Assembly’s approval before scheduling a session on a public holiday. However, he noted that no such decision was made or discussed during the Assembly’s last sitting.
Mr. Satheesan further argued that the ruling party should have ideally proposed a resolution to convene the special November sitting as a continuation of the 15th Assembly session, which wrapped up on October 9.
He openly accused the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) of disrespecting political norms and the spirit of parliamentary democracy. He stated that the special sitting was announced ‘arbitrarily’ without explaining the crucial reasons or any ‘hidden agenda’ necessitating such an unplanned session.
Copies of Mr. Satheesan’s letter were also sent to M.B. Rajesh, the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Excise, and Local Bodies.
