Kerala’s State Goods and Services Tax (GST) department has initiated a significant registration drive. This effort aims to expand the tax base by bringing more traders into the GST network and encouraging timely filing of tax returns.
This proactive step aligns with an announcement made by Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal during his presentation of the 2025-26 State Budget last February. He had highlighted plans for statewide campaigns to integrate more traders into the GST system and boost return filing efficiency.
As part of the drive, special tax squads will conduct field surveys across all districts. These teams will visit businesses to raise crucial awareness about GST registration requirements, as confirmed by the Additional Commissioner of the State GST Department.
It is mandatory for traders dealing exclusively in goods with an annual turnover exceeding ₹40 lakh to register for GST. Similarly, businesses whose turnover surpasses ₹20 lakh and also provide services must obtain GST registration.
Furthermore, businesses falling under Section 24 of the GST Act, which outlines ‘Compulsory registration in certain cases,’ are obligated to register irrespective of their annual turnover. The entire GST registration process is conveniently available online.
