Karnataka is poised to significantly bolster its electricity infrastructure by constructing additional power substations, prioritizing locations where suitable land can be acquired. This initiative, announced by Energy Minister K.J. George on Monday, aims to enhance electricity distribution and guarantee a consistent, reliable power supply throughout the state.
During the inauguration of a new 110/11 kV power distribution substation, developed by the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) in Sulekere (Aggunda) village, Arsikere taluk, Hassan district, Minister George emphasized, “While Karnataka currently boasts ample electricity, the critical need is for robust distribution. We’ve already initiated plans for 100 new substations, but more are undoubtedly needed. The primary hurdle remains land acquisition. As soon as suitable land becomes available, new substations will be swiftly established to meet rising demands.”
The Minister also highlighted ongoing governmental efforts to improve power access. He noted the KUSUM-C scheme, which is actively solarizing agricultural feeders to ensure uninterrupted daytime power for irrigation pump sets. Furthermore, the Niranthara Jyothi program is directing officials to maintain a stable single-phase power supply for residential consumers. Addressing unauthorized connections, Mr. George stated that the Akrama-Sakrama scheme is in effect to regularize agricultural power connections. “Upon our government assuming office, approximately 4.5 lakh applications for regularization were pending. We’ve since deliberated a lasting solution, and over 3 lakh pump sets have already been successfully regularized,” he concluded.
