The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a monumental feat by successfully launching its heaviest communication satellite to date, the CMS-03, from Sriharikota. This historic mission was powered by the indigenously developed LVM3-M5 rocket, affectionately nicknamed ‘Bahubali’.
The CMS-03 satellite, weighing approximately 4,400 kg, was precisely placed into orbit, marking a significant advancement in India’s space capabilities. Launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Station, the ‘Bahubali’ rocket carried this substantial payload with remarkable success.
This mission is particularly noteworthy as the CMS-03 is the country’s most powerful communication satellite yet. Designed to provide services across a vast oceanic area and the Indian landmass for at least 15 years, it promises to significantly enhance the nation’s communication infrastructure.
ISRO chief V. Narayanan highlighted the satellite’s role in bolstering India’s communication capabilities for years to come, proudly calling it a “shiny example of Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India). The satellite incorporates cutting-edge technologies, underscoring India’s commitment to indigenous innovation.
The Indian Navy will benefit immensely from CMS-03, which will offer robust telecommunication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region. This will be crucial for enhancing the Navy’s space-based communication and maritime domain awareness.
Experts, like Lt Gen Anil K. Bhatt (retd), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), believe this satellite will be a “game changer” for India’s maritime and national security. It will facilitate advanced, secure communication channels, vital for the Indian Ocean Region.
Key features of the CMS-03 satellite include advanced encryption, broad frequency coverage, and high-capacity transponders, all designed to support sophisticated naval operations and improve situational awareness.
The LVM3 rocket itself is a testament to India’s indigenous space technology, including its C25 cryogenic stage. It boasts a strong launch record, starting from its initial development flight in 2014.
