New Delhi: Heinrich Klaasen, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, could find himself back in the auction pool for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mini-auction. This comes despite his hefty retention by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a significant Rs 23 crore last season. While SRH has maintained a tight-lipped stance regarding the former South African international, rumors are swirling among other IPL franchises, many of whom have already added him to their potential acquisition lists.

The 34-year-old Klaasen recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Although he delivered an explosive 105 runs off just 39 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in SRH’s final game of the 2025 season, his impactful cameos often failed to translate into consistent, substantial innings throughout the league. His retention price of Rs 23 crore was notably higher than even skipper Pat Cummins’ Rs 18 crore. This significant investment, coupled with inconsistent returns, suggests SRH might release him to free up crucial funds, potentially to re-bid for him at a lower price in the auction.
Releasing Klaasen would provide SRH with a substantial boost to their auction purse, enabling them to strategically rebuild their squad after a disappointing sixth-place finish in IPL 2025, especially following their strong runners-up performance in 2024. Sources close to the developments indicate this move is being considered to address critical team weaknesses. An industry insider commented, “This would be a smart move by SRH. With an extra Rs 23 crore, they could fill crucial gaps, build a potent bowling attack, and stabilize their middle order. They might even try to bring Klaasen back for around Rs 15 crore, using the remaining funds for other key acquisitions.”
Other major acquisitions for SRH, Mohammed Shami (Rs 10 crore) and Harshal Patel (Rs 8 crore), also experienced underwhelming seasons. Shami struggled with fitness, while Patel, despite taking 16 wickets in 13 games, conceded runs at an economy rate of almost 10 per over. Although Shami has garnered some interest following his recent domestic performances, franchises are expected to approach him cautiously, a strategy SRH might also adopt.
The Hyderabad franchise is also keenly looking to acquire a top-tier spinner, having been dissatisfied with Rahul Chahar’s performance. Chahar featured in only one game, and his underwhelming showings in intra-squad matches led the team to opt for less experienced players like Zeeshan Ansari (10 games) and left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey. Regardless of these other considerations, Klaasen’s future remains a significant topic of discussion as the retained player list nears finalization, with multiple franchises preparing substantial bids for the talented right-handed batter.
