Bengaluru is reeling from a deeply disturbing incident involving a domestic worker who allegedly brutally killed her employer’s beloved pet dog within the confines of an apartment building’s elevator on Kannur Road.
The horrific act was captured on the lift’s CCTV camera. The footage reportedly shows the accused, identified as 29-year-old Pushpalatha, lifting the dog, named Goofy, by its leash and violently slamming it onto the floor, resulting in the pet’s immediate death.
Following the brutal assault, the video captures Pushpalatha dragging the lifeless puppy out of the elevator and towards the apartment.
The chilling CCTV footage quickly circulated online, igniting a firestorm of outrage from the general public and dedicated animal welfare advocates.
Initially, Pushpalatha reportedly informed the dog’s owner, Rashika K.R., that Goofy had died mysteriously and she had no knowledge of the cause. However, Rashika, suspicious of the domestic worker’s account, reported the incident to the police. Their investigation, which included reviewing the CCTV footage, starkly revealed the truth behind the pet’s death.
Acting on the complaint, authorities swiftly registered a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960. Additionally, charges were filed under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, pertaining to mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering any animal useless. Pushpalatha has since been arrested.
Hired in September with a monthly salary of ₹23,000, Pushpalatha reportedly confessed during interrogation that her frustration stemmed from the pet’s incessant barking.
Further investigation unearthed that the accused had recently been caught stealing valuables from the same household and had received a stern warning. Police now suspect the brutal killing was a deliberate act of revenge.
