Finnish President: Only Trump Can Bring Putin to the Negotiating Table

Finland’s President Alexander Stubb has asserted that former US President Donald Trump is the only individual capable of compelling Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in peace negotiations regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking to the BBC, Stubb emphasized that a forceful approach, metaphorically a “stick,” is necessary to bring Russia to the negotiating table, contrasting this with a softer “carrot” strategy.

Stubb also reiterated Finland’s unwavering stance against recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea and other occupied Ukrainian territories. He expressed his desire for Ukraine to secure membership in both the European Union and NATO following the cessation of hostilities. Stubb noted that Trump’s approach, which he perceived as evolving towards a firmer stance, had potentially advanced peace talks more significantly in recent months compared to previous years.

During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump had previously suggested that a peace deal could be reached, hinting that Ukraine might not join NATO. Stubb attributed Trump’s shifting rhetoric to Russia’s limited territorial gains and Ukraine’s successful counteroffensives.

The Finnish President highlighted the economic strain on Russia, describing its economy as smaller than Italy’s, with depleted reserves, near-zero growth, and high inflation. He proposed leveraging economic pressure, such as using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, and further reducing Russian oil and gas exports to Europe as means to encourage negotiations.

Stubb concluded that Putin’s strategic objectives—namely, the takeover of Ukraine, the division of Europe, and the weakening of NATO—had all failed, pointing to Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO as evidence. He expressed optimism for a resolution to the conflict, outlining a potential two-phase peace process involving a ceasefire and subsequent extended negotiations, and stressed the importance of pragmatic diplomacy in international relations.
