Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, a Congress MP representing Bhongir, has leveled serious allegations against BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao. Reddy claims that Rama Rao is actively undermining the Hyderabad Disaster Management and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) precisely because the agency is demolishing illegal constructions on government lands valued at thousands of crores, properties allegedly encroached upon during the previous BRS government’s tenure.
Responding to KTR’s public engagement with individuals affected by HYDRAA’s demolitions, MP Reddy highlighted a stark reality: according to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry, a staggering 75% of Telangana’s and Hyderabad’s lakes and waterways have been consumed by illegal encroachments.
Reddy further detailed the extent of the problem, noting that Hyderabad, which once boasted 600 lakes, saw 44 vanish completely and 127 partially encroached upon during the BRS rule. In stark contrast, HYDRAA has been instrumental in safeguarding 500 acres of public land, clearing encroachments from 360 lakes, 20 natural waterways (nalas), and 38 public parks. He specifically cited cases in Serilingampally and Hafeezpet, where HYDRAA secured 29 acres of government land previously seized by a builder, who had already illegally occupied another 39 acres.
“For a decade, Mr. KTR oversaw the Municipal Administration portfolio yet failed to act against these encroachments. The BRS government’s negligence directly led to innocent citizens becoming victims of illegal constructions and severe flooding,” Reddy asserted. He criticized KTR for attempting to demonize HYDRAA, describing it as a ‘ghost to scare people,’ when its true purpose, as established by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, is to actively protect lakes, waterways, and state lands from such illegal takeovers.
The MP concluded by reiterating his claim that the ten-year BRS rule was marked by the indiscriminate issuance of permissions, resulting in widespread encroachment on vast government properties. He urged citizens who have directly benefited from HYDRAA’s protective efforts to step forward and share their stories.
