Bihar’s political landscape is buzzing after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s use of the term “katta,” commonly referring to an illegal gun, to describe the RJD’s influence over the Congress in the state. This statement has drawn sharp criticism and amusement from the RJD and Congress.
Adding to the political discourse, the ruling NDA is facing scrutiny regarding its “jungle raj” rhetoric, especially after the arrest of Anant Singh, a candidate from the JDU, in connection with the death of Jan Suraaj Party campaigner Dularchand Yadav following a clash in Mokama.
Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhan’s Chief Ministerial nominee, responded to the Prime Minister’s comment by stating “no surprise,” while also taking a jab at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s absence from PM Modi’s recent roadshow in Patna. Yadav suggested this absence indicates the BJP’s lack of intention to re-appoint Nitish Kumar as CM.
Reacting to the “katta” remarks made at a rally in Arrah, Yadav commented, “Jiski jaisi soch hai, uski waisi bhavna hai” (His emotions and words reflect his mindset). He added, “I would not want to comment on it. But listen to the PM’s language. I have never heard any PM speak like this.” Yadav also implied that PM Modi might have used similar tactics to bring other parties into the NDA fold.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge echoed these sentiments, remarking that such statements undermine the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office. He stated, “Modi ji is the PM of this country; his saying such things is laughable.”
However, Upendra Kushwaha, president of NDA partner Rashtriya Lok Morcha, defended the Prime Minister, reiterating his belief that the Congress was compelled to announce Tejashwi Yadav as the CM face due to pressure from the RJD.
The Mahagathbandhan, through VIP supremo Mukesh Sahani, has also highlighted the arrest of Anant Singh. Sahani criticized CM Nitish Kumar’s handling of law and order, suggesting the state government operates under remote control from Delhi. He asserted that the people of Bihar are ready for a change.
Meanwhile, Bihar’s Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar clarified that Dularchand Yadav’s death was due to cardiac and respiratory failure, not a gunshot, according to the post-mortem report. While a bullet mark was found on the leg, it was not the cause of death.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar affirmed the Election Commission of India’s zero tolerance for violence, promising peaceful and transparent elections. The poll panel has already initiated the transfer of key officials in Mokama and directed disciplinary actions.
Anant Kumar Singh, known for his strongman image and facing multiple cases, maintains his innocence regarding Dularchand’s death and has expressed confidence in public support via social media.
