Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over a Belgian military base for the third night running, according to the country’s defence minister.
Authorities deployed a helicopter to the Kleine-Brogel base after the drones were sighted. They were reported to have then flown towards the Netherlands, as detailed by national broadcaster VRT.
Defence Minister Theo Francken stated that an investigation is currently underway, describing the situation as “a clear mission targeting Kleine Broge.” He further commented to Belgian radio on Monday that the activity strongly resembled an espionage operation, while also expressing a need for caution and refraining from premature speculation regarding the perpetrators.
Drones have also been observed near other military air bases, including Leopoldsburg in central Limburg province and Marche-en-Famenne in the country’s southeast. The VRT report from the weekend also mentioned drone sightings near the coastal airports of Ostend and Antwerp’s Deurne.
This is not an isolated incident, as similar drone activities have been reported across European airspace in recent months. In October, Munich airport in Germany experienced temporary operational suspensions on two separate occasions within a 24-hour period due to unconfirmed drone sightings. The Danish defence minister previously commented on drones sighted over Danish airports, suggesting they appeared to be the work of a “professional actor,” though no evidence pointed to Russian involvement at the time.
These incidents highlight growing concerns over aerial surveillance and security across Europe, prompting multinational discussions and potential policy changes within defense alliances.
