Battling the Deluge: GBA’s Proactive Plan to End Flooding Near Manyata Tech Park

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is taking decisive action to tackle the persistent flooding issues plaguing Manyata Tech Park and its surrounding areas. With the next monsoon season on the horizon, proactive measures are now underway to safeguard the region.

Under the GBA’s jurisdiction, the North Corporation has put forth a proposal to construct a new storm-water drain and restore an existing one that has fallen victim to encroachment. Officials emphasize that the financial burden for these crucial infrastructure projects will primarily rest with the tech park management and the various companies operating along the affected stretch.

A pivotal meeting is scheduled for this week, bringing together representatives from the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB), the Revenue Department, and the tech park’s management. The goal is to collaboratively strategize and finalize the implementation plan for the proposed works.

Authorities have long acknowledged that the flooding around Manyata Tech Park is a chronic problem, exacerbated by the disappearance of the area’s original storm-water drain. This vital channel, once responsible for carrying away rainwater, no longer exists.

Historical misclassification played a role, as the land originally traversed by the drain was designated ‘B kharab’ (government land deemed unsuitable for cultivation) and subsequently allocated to private owners. Over time, these allotments led to construction directly over the drain’s former path, effectively blocking its natural course.

This disruption has severely impeded the natural flow of rainwater, leaving stormwater with no clear path to downstream drainage systems. A joint investigation by KIADB, the Revenue Department, and the GBA revealed that most existing drains near the tech park are either clogged or entirely disconnected. This dire situation results in significant flooding even during moderate rainfall and poses a serious threat during heavy monsoon downpours.

To rectify this, all involved departments have committed to a comprehensive field inspection and will produce a detailed technical report outlining the best approach to restore the drainage network. Following recommendations from the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority, specific locations have been identified for new drain construction, ensuring reconnection to the main drainage channels.

A key strategy involves building two parallel drains: one following the original historical alignment and another supplementary line running in the opposite direction. This dual-drain system aims to effectively manage excessive rainwater during peak monsoon periods.

However, the project has encountered some resistance from two private companies within the tech park. These firms have voiced concerns about potential construction impacts on their campuses and existing facilities. GBA officials have confirmed that the upcoming meeting will also focus on addressing these property concerns while ensuring infrastructure safety and project progress.

Officials underscore the urgency and importance of these scientifically planned drainage works. They are committed to completing the project before May 2026, stressing that the current absence of proper stormwater flow makes the area extremely vulnerable to severe flooding.
